She’s known for leaving cryptic messages in her songs, but Taylor Swift didn’t mince her words when issuing her bombshell statement endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 election – reportedly pushed by Donald Trump’s ‘frightening’ diatribe.
The megastar, 34, had noticeably not endorsed a candidate, with a source telling the DailyMail.com that the Blank Space singer had been going ‘back and forth’ for weeks about whether or not to speak publicly about the upcoming election.
‘She had toyed with making a statement after the debate, but wasn’t 100 per cent,’ the source explained.
However, after watching the primetime debate – which saw Trump, 78, accusing migrants of eating pets and claiming Democrats want to ‘execute babies’ in the ninth month of pregnancy – the songstress knew she ‘had to speak out and pick sides for the safety of herself, her family, friends and fans.’
‘She found his diatribe to be downright frightening,’ they said.
The source continued: ‘He was dishonest, arrogant, crass and the worst part about all of it was that he was unapologetic about it.’
After noticing how ‘detached’ Trump was, the source reported that Swift ‘knew’ she needed to endorse Harris, 59.
”[She knew] it was time to stand again on the side of history by supporting a candidate who could help create a country free from hate, inequality, division and racism,’ they shared.
‘Taylor will likely be making a donation to the campaign,’ the source continued.
‘Aware of the immense political influence her voice and fanbase carry, Taylor endorsed Kamala — for herself, her fans, her rights as a woman, and even for her cat, Meredith.’
Swift’s statement, which was posted to Instagram, garnered more than 2.8 million likes in less than an hour.
The post came weeks after she voiced her hesitancy at speaking out in the wake of the foiled terror plot at her Vienna concert in August.
In a statement posted to Instagram the Cruel Summer singer said she was left ‘devastated’ and revealed she initially stayed silent as her ‘priority’ was finishing the European leg of her tour ‘safely.’
She added: ‘Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows.’
Swift, who is dating Chiefs player Travis Kelce, then sparked a backlash after she was spotted with close friend Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick, at the US Open.
Brittany has liked some of Trump’s Instagram posts in recent weeks, leading to speculation she supports the former president.
She later sent Instagram into tailspin after she liked a reply from a follower which said: ‘TRUMP-VANCE 2024’.
She also liked another message of support after she incited fury for initially liking a post from Trump about the November election.
‘Glad to see you aren’t backing down,’ read the comment that she liked. ‘We are all entitled to our own opinions and shouldn’t be bullied into submission.’
The former president publicly thanked Brittany for her support.
‘I want to thank beautiful Brittany Mahomes for so strongly defending me, and the fact that MAGA is the greatest and most powerful Political Movement in the History of our now Failing Country,’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social network earlier this month.
Swift faced blowback from some over her close friendship with Brittany with the two often hanging out at games together and snapped on social media.
Former President Trump brushed off Swift’s bombshell endorsement of Harris, saying Wednesday morning he valued Brittany’s support more and isn’t a fan of Swift.
‘She [Brittany] is a big Trump fan,’ Trump said in an interview with Fox and Friends, which followed a late night interview with Sean Hannity on the same network after a clash with Harris that had multiple conservative commentators giving the edge to his rival.
‘I was not a Taylor Swift fan,’ he said. ‘It was just a question of time. She couldn’t — you couldn’t possibly endorse Biden. You look at Biden. You couldn’t possibly endorse him.’
He called the singer a ‘very liberal’ person, and tried to brush off her backing Harris – which signed off with a slashing ‘cat lady’ joke.
‘She seems to always endorse a Democrat she will probably pay a price for it in the marketplace. But, no. I like Brittany. I think Brittany is great. She got a lot of news last week. She’s is a big MAGA fan that’s the one I like more than Taylor Swift,’ Trump said.
It’s not the first time the Eras Tour singer has endorsed a democratic candidate. In 2020, Taylor backed Joe Biden in the 2020 election, and in an interview in 2019 with The Guardian, she said she supported Hilary Clinton over Trump in the 2016 election and accused Trump of treating the presidency like ‘an autocracy.’
