Patrick Mahomes is a special one. And the Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is aware of that. He has turned out to be the league’s face after Tom Brady‘s departure, and deservedly so. With six AFC West titles, three AFC Conference Championships, three Super Bowl appearances, and two rings alongside two MVPs to his name inside six seasons, the quarterback has one of the best game/trophy ratios in the history of the league. Well, Chiefs’ Head Coach Reid acknowledges how Mahomes manages to get those chucks and risk rewards to get those ridiculous numbers for his team.

Ahead of the big Eagles match on Monday, Reid talked about the specialty of Mahomes. He particularly detailed the times when the score is close, and the quarterback comes in clutch to add the extra push to the team. Mahomes, on the other hand, opened up about his plans for the upcoming Super Bowl rematch against the NFC rivals.

Andy Reid lauds extraordinary Patrick Mahomes

The 65-year-old was asked about what it feels to have someone like Patrick Mahomes when things are tougher than usual. During the press conference, Reid was asked about having Magic C (referring to Mahomes) and “take those chunks and those risk rewards.” In reply, he pointed out the rollercoaster that happens out there in the field, and also the very times when someone like Mahomes is needed to save the day. He also talked about the leadership quality of the quarterback, insisting he makes the team around him more effective.

“There’s no better weekend than this past one to look at how crazy the league is and how much parity there is in the league. The league strive for that, give every city an opportunity to be successful and you saw it. I mean this past weekend was wild, so to have somebody like Pat ends up being a big part of that”, Reid talked about the wild nature of the league, and how the team has their best weapon in that scenario.

“You start looking at the games that are determined by one score, it’s ridiculous every year it increases by number. So to have somebody that can lead like Pat does and play the way he does rally the guys around him… I think is important”, the head coach detailed the exact time when the quarterback becomes irreplaceable, and also how he makes the players around him better like a true leader. He also touched on how the squad’s bye week went and that the guys came back in good shape and “didn’t sit on the couch.” Reid’s words come at a pretty significant time when the Chiefs need the best of Patrick Mahomes.

The Mini Bowl against their arch-nemesis Eagles is 3 days away, and the team would like to witness exactly why the head coach said all that about the quarterback. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes opened up about his preparations for the upcoming game against the Eagles.

Patrick Mahomes will be sticking to his fundamentals

Talking to the press conference, Patrick Mahomes highlighted that he prefers not to do something extraordinary, and rather focuses on his fundamentals. “Yeah, I think for me it’s… I always go back to the fundamentals as best as I can during the bye week and then watching the tape, seeing what we did well what we can improve on and try to use that into the next part of the season and be better than what were”, Mahomes reflected on his bye week activities, and how that might help the Chiefs in their next game.

PM & COACH

The fundamentals are what made him so effective throughout his career. And such was the case against the Dolphins at their recent game in Germany. Coming from a defeat, the quarterback stuck to his basics and handled the notorious Dolphins offense with relative ease. Then, NFL Analyst Michael Irvin also shared his praises for Mahomes, stating, “Patrick Mahomes is basically God playing quarterback.” Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 21-14 victory over the Dolphins, yet the game didn’t feature his typically stellar numbers. With only 185 passing yards, Mahomes recorded a season-low.

He will be looking to recreate the feat once again, especially after the blades are sharpened from the bye week. The game is looking equally challenging on both ends. The most-anticipated Super Bowl matchup will be all about two teams leading their respective divisions. The Chiefs played against their NFC rivals in one of the most memorable 38-25 slugfest in February, where Mahomes and Jalen Hurts played in a showdown for the ages. It will be a feast for NFL fans to watch the two QBs prove why they continue to be the best in the NFL all season.
