Michelle Obama Explains Why She’s ‘Not Interested in Politics’—And Why a Future Run Is ‘Unthinkable’

Michelle Obama has been keeping a low profile—for the sake of her daughters.

The former First Lady opened up on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast Thursday, explaining why she has no plans to enter politics.

“I was so glad when we got out of the White House,” the 61-year-old admitted, reflecting on the end of her husband, former President Barack Obama’s, second term in 2017.

She emphasized that her decision is largely rooted in protecting her daughters, Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23.

“I wanted them to have the freedom of not having the eyes of the world on them,” Michelle said. “They still have to deal with paparazzi and being who they are while trying to carve out their own identity.”

For that reason, she made her stance clear: “When people ask me if I would ever run [for office], the answer is no.”

‘We’ve Done Enough’

Michelle stressed that those who wonder about a potential political run “have absolutely no idea the sacrifice that your kids make when your parents are in that role.”

“Not only am I not interested in politics in that way, but the thought of putting my girls back into that spotlight when they are just now establishing themselves—it’s just not worth it,” she explained.

As far as Michelle is concerned, the topic is settled. “The question has been asked and answered. It’s never gonna happen,” she declared.

“They’ve already served their time. … It would be unthinkable. Nope.”

Michelle’s Public Absence Sparks Speculation

Her comments come amid speculation about her recent absence from public events with Barack, including former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and a Los Angeles Clippers game earlier this month.

In January, Page Six reported that Michelle is “checked out” of Washington, D.C., life, spending most of her time in Martha’s Vineyard.

“You cannot tell Michelle what to do—no one can,” a source told the outlet.

Meanwhile, rumors of marital trouble between Michelle and Barack have circulated, though the couple has subtly dismissed speculation with affectionate social media posts.
